Mundane moments are a Spiritual opportunity

Last week I was in the middle of a bathroom remodel which turned my house into a messy, drywall dust-covered grand central station instead of the peaceful, quiet sanctuary it usually is.  With all of the upheaval, I was starting to feel pretty frazzled and grouchy.  But then, as I was drivng to Home Depot, distracted by the errand I was running, I remembered what it is like to come home - to become fully present and fully in my body and how incredibly alive everything feels when I do that. I moved my attention out of my head, into my body and into the present moment.  When I did, the whole world shifted for me.  The colors became brighter.  The birds sang more clearly.  A wave of relaxation flooded through my body as all of my senses heightened, and I felt so good.  The process of going to Home Depot to pick up a bolt, became a magical moment.

How often do you feel like all of the things you have to handle or mundane activities you do in life get in the way of your spiritual life? But what if the best way to truly connect with and experience your spiritual essence is to become fully present - out of your head, into your body and into the present moment?

There are several ways to become more present. For me, my daily meditation practice has helped me to more quickly and easily move into a space of being present. But if you don't meditate, other things that help are hugging someone you love, sitting outside under a tree or basking in the sun, playing in water, digging in the dirt or even hugging a tree. When you want to try to come into your body and out of your head, moving your body through exercise, dance, going for a walk, stretching, or anything else you can think of can help a lot, and then try to be mindful of your body while you move.

Try it and see what happens. The next time you are drivng somewhere and preoccupied with just getting there, switch your attention out of your head and out of the future and move into your body and into the present moment. See what happens for you.
